This year marks the 23rd anniversary of National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands. More than 200,000 volunteers and park visitors will celebrate at 2,500 sites in every state, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our nation celebrates National Public Lands Day in various ways--hikes, free entrance, trail maintenance parties, campouts, shoreline cleanups and more.
Last year, volunteers contributed endless hours and millions of dollars in time improving federal, state and local public lands. Highlights of their work included removing trash and invasive plants; building and maintaining miles of trails; and planting trees, shrubs and other native plants.
There are many ways you can help care for your national parks. Volunteer opportunities can be found by visiting www.nps.gov/getinvolved/volunteer.htm.
