National Cave and Karst Reserch InstituteName: National Cave and Karst Reserch InstituteDate: November 21, 2019Event Description:
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to fly through Carlsbad Cavern? You’ll get virtual taste of it at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 21st. Last winter Malcolm Williamson, and his team from the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at the University of Arkansas, spent 20 days LiDAR (laser) scanning the cavern. During next week’s Pecos Valley Grotto meeting he will share his amazing 3D scans which show Carlsbad Cavern in stunning detail. The black and white “photo” in the attached flyer is not a photo but a LiDAR scan!
Join us on Thursday, November 21 at 7 p.m. at NCKRI, located at 400-1 Cascades Avenue. The meeting is free. If this is your first time to NCKRI you’ll see a sculpture of Jim White on your right as you approach the building. Our entrance is at the opposite end. You can park across the street in the gravel lot or in the paved lot behind Anytime Fitness.
As a bonus, yesterday we had a private special event at NCKRI where we put out materials from past exhibits. If you didn’t see the posters from last year’s International Cave Photographers Exhibit or the crystal-encrusted skull and other fossils from last fall’s Cave Paleontology Exhibit, this is your chance for a second look. Be sure to pick up a copy of our latest annual report to see what we’ve been up to during the past year.
